The famous "Solidarity" movement, which was instrumental in the fall of the Iron Curtain in Europe, was born in Gdańsk, specifically in the summer of 1980, during a strike at the local Lenin Shipyards.
The legacy of the famous organisation led by Lech Wałęsa is documented by the European Solidarity Centre, a museum combined with a research and education centre. The area of the former shipyards surrounding the characteristic ESC building features numerous cultural institutions, fashionable clubs and street food zones, a popular hang-out in the summer.
